When your sewer line fails, the signs are hard to ignore. Sewage smell coming up from the yard. The same drain backing up over and over.
Toilets that gurgle when you flush them or when another fixture drains. Ground that looks wet or has started to sink over where the line runs. These are not problems that fix themselves over time.
4L Contracting holds Texas Master Plumber License 40980. You can verify any Texas plumbing license at tsbpe.texas.gov. We have over 50 years of combined experience replacing sewer lines across College Station, Bryan, Brenham and the surrounding Brazos Valley counties. Office hours Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM. HOW WE REPLACE A SEWER LINE
We replace sewer lines by excavation. The camera inspection and the line locate come first. The trench then follows the pipe rather than searching for it. And the length being replaced is decided by what is actually failing, not by guesswork. Where the line runs under the house, we tunnel in from outside to reach it.
Full Excavation
We open a trench along the path of the line and remove the old pipe end to end. Then we lay new pipe to the correct fall, and backfill in compacted lifts. It is a larger operation on the surface than the alternatives, and in exchange it gives complete access. Anything else wrong down there gets found while the ground is open rather than a year later.
Where it is the right answer: a line that has lost its grade, a belly holding water, or a collapsed or crushed section. Also a run with multiple defects, or any situation where what is around the pipe matters as much as the pipe itself.
Yard and driveway: a trench along the run. We cut concrete and asphalt where the line runs under them. Putting that surface back is separate work, priced on its own, and it is not included in the replacement. Fence panels come out and go back. Sod, seed and planting beds are normally the owner’s to restore. The written scope says so plainly, rather than leaving it to be discovered.
If a No Dig Method Would Suit You Better
Some lines are candidates for a trenchless method, meaning pipe bursting or lining. We do not run that equipment ourselves, and we can still do the job. We bring in a specialist to carry out the no dig work. The job stays ours to manage, so you deal with us from the quote to the finish. If the camera shows your line is a genuine candidate, we will say so. We will not push an open cut simply because it is the method we run ourselves.
One thing worth knowing before anyone sells you one: a trenchless method follows the path and grade of the existing pipe. The defect may be a sag caused by ground settling under the line. Replacing the material without correcting the grade leaves you a new pipe in the same low spot.
After the camera inspection and line locate, we walk you through what your line actually needs and why. The scope and the price go in writing before anything is dug.
WHAT THE JOB LOOKS LIKE, STEP BY STEP
Sewer line replacement involves more than just digging and laying pipe. Here is how we run a job from the day permits are pulled to the day we hand it back to you.
Permits
We pull the required city permits before work begins. College Station and Bryan both require permits for sewer line work, and we handle that paperwork on your behalf. Work does not start until approvals are in hand.
City Inspection Scheduling
Where the city requires an inspection at specific stages, we coordinate that schedule. You do not have to track down an inspector or manage the inspection process yourself.
Excavation
We mark utilities, set up the work area, and open the ground to the extent the replacement method requires. For traditional replacement, we trench the full run. For pipe bursting, we open access pits at each end.
Pipe Replacement
Old pipe comes out, or is burst in place. New pipe goes in, properly sloped for drainage and connected to the existing sewer system at both ends. We use materials and connections that meet current code.
Backfill and Compaction
We backfill the trench or access pits in lifts and compact each layer. Proper compaction prevents the ground from settling unevenly over the line after we leave.
Grade and Cleanup
We restore the surface to grade, remove equipment and debris, and leave the property as clean as the job allows. If concrete or asphalt was cut, patching it is separate work and is quoted on its own. Final inspection happens before we close out the job.
Every job ends with a workmanship warranty. If something we did is not right, we come back and fix it.
What our customers say

Found late Friday evening that I did not have hot water, and it was the weekend... YIKES!! Contacted 4L Contracting LLC; they came out within a couple of hours and had me working in a short time. Lee went above and beyond, letting me know about other problems identified in my attic, a problem with my chimney, and a heating vent installation problem. After he left, I found a water leak in the laundry room ceiling. He turned around and came back to my house. He found the air conditioning drain pipe was backed up. He blew it out the drain pipe, preventing a big disaster. So appreciate his thoroughness and helping me on a Friday after-hours house call. He definitely went above and beyond.
I had a great experience working with 4L Contracting LLC. They were awesome to work with, they were professional, responsive, and clearly knew what they were doing. We had a massive leak that needed immediate attention, and they showed up quickly and handled it efficiently. They not only fixed the issue fast but also made sure everything was done right. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone needing reliable, high quality work!
Used 4L Contracting the first time a couple years ago and since then they have replaced a water heater, reset toilets, replaced water lines, and located and fixed a leak under the house! They have been amazing to work with over the years, I cannot recommend these guys enough!
Water Softener installation Completed! Just wanted to give a shout out to Kurt and Lane on their outstanding customer service today. I hired 4L Contracting LLC to install a water softener in our home. After finding out the water softener I had purchased was missing parts, the job was rescheduled for Monday. I was able to return the water softener and get a replacement fairly quick. So I sent a text to Kurt, letting him know I had done so. He informed me they were nearby and could do the job in about 30 minutes if I could meet them back at my home. I hurried home and in about 2 hours the job was completed. Tonight my wife and I shall enjoy a soft water shower!
My husband and I had a broken pipe in the foundation and it was leaking pretty bad into our hallway, and 4L Contracting came that day we called, assessed the issue, and was back the next day and completely fixed the problem. They were so nice and helpful! I cannot tell you how pleased we were with their service. I recommend 4L Contracting!
My wife and I discovered a water leak coming out of our wall. 4L Contracting LLC came out that day and found where the leak was coming from (copper pipe leaking in the slab), they started working immediately and finished the next day.
These plumbers are honest, knowledgeable and reliable! They helped us fix a leak and answered all our questions about other issues in the house. Highly recommend!
Lee and his guys are Great. Their communication on our projects have been superb! Always letting us know when they will be at the job site. Lee is doing 3 projects for our Airbnb's at one time, and his organization of his paperwork is paramount for us.
WHAT IT COSTS AND HOW YOU PAY
Sewer line replacement cost depends on the length of the run, the depth, the method used, and what we find in the ground. We do not publish ranges that do not mean anything to your specific situation. What we will do is give you a firm number in writing before work starts.
Price in Writing Before Work Starts
After the camera inspection and line locate, we provide a written quote that covers the full scope of the job. No verbal estimates. No surprises added to the invoice after the fact. You approve the price before any equipment moves.
Financing Available
Sewer line replacement is a significant investment. We offer financing to qualified customers so you can get the work done now rather than wait while the problem gets worse underground. Ask us about terms when you call.
Workmanship Warranty
Our work is backed by a workmanship warranty. If a problem with our installation develops within that window, we return and correct it at no charge to you.

Common questions
Can we use the bathrooms while the line is being replaced?
Not while the line is open and disconnected. Plan on no toilets, no showers and no washing machine during the hours the old pipe is out and the new run is being tied in. On a short run that is often a single working day. On a longer excavation we can usually restore service overnight so the house is livable, and we tell you at the start which days will be the dry ones so you can arrange somewhere to be during those hours.
How far does my responsibility go, and where does the city take over?
In most cases the property owner owns the line from the house to the point where it meets the public main or the utility connection, which can include the part running under your yard and sometimes under the street or an easement. That dividing point is set by the local jurisdiction rather than by a rule of thumb, so we confirm it for your address before quoting. If the camera shows the defect sits on the public side, we tell you, and you should not be paying us to replace it.
What happens to my trees, my sprinkler system and my fence?
Anything directly over the line is at risk, so we walk the route with you before we dig and you see exactly what is in the path. Fence panels usually have to come out and go back. Irrigation lines crossing the trench get cut, and we repair or cap them and point them out as we find them. Roots in the pipe belong to a tree that may need work, and tree removal is a separate trade. None of this should be a surprise on the day.
Do you put the grass back, and will the ground sink later?
We backfill in lifts, compact each layer, restore the surface to grade and take the spoil and debris away. We cut concrete and asphalt where the line runs under them. Putting that surface back is separate work, priced on its own, and it is not included. Sod, seed, planting beds and landscaping are normally the owner's to restore, and the written scope states exactly which of those we are and are not doing. Even with good compaction a trench can settle a little through the first heavy rains, which is normal and is a matter of topping up soil. If it is more than that, tell us.
Do you do trenchless, pipe bursting or lining?
No. We replace sewer lines by excavation. We do not run trenchless equipment ourselves, and where a line suits it we bring in a specialist and manage the job. We would rather say that plainly than take the job and subcontract it without telling you.
If the camera shows your line is a genuine candidate for a no dig method and that suits your property better, we will tell you so and tell you what to ask a contractor who does it. One thing worth knowing before anyone sells you one: a no dig method follows the path and grade of the existing pipe, so it replaces the material without correcting a sag. If your problem is a belly rather than pipe condition, it can leave you a new pipe in the same low spot.
What if you find a second problem once the trench is open?
It happens, and the camera work beforehand is what keeps it rare. The usual finds are an unmarked utility crossing the path, a second failed section beyond the one we were after, a cast iron transition at the house thinner than it looked on camera, or groundwater filling the trench. We stop, show you what is there, and price the additional work separately in writing before continuing. Nothing extra gets done and billed on the assumption that you would have said yes.
Should the job include a cleanout, and what does that do for me?
If your house does not have one, this is the moment to add it while the ground is already open. A cleanout is a capped access point on the line outside the house, usually a two way fitting, that lets a camera or a cable into the pipe in both directions without pulling a toilet or working from the roof vent. It makes every future service call quicker and less invasive, and it gives a backup somewhere to relieve itself outside rather than into your shower.
How do I keep roots out of the new line?
New pipe does most of the work by itself. Modern materials come in long runs with far fewer joints, and roots enter at joints and cracks rather than through sound pipe wall. Beyond that, do not plant trees over the run, and remember a root system reaches roughly as wide as the canopy above it. If you have large trees nearby, put a camera in the line every few years, because catching an intrusion early is the difference between a jetting visit and another excavation.
